Background

Why VIVEKANANDA 125?

India is currently at a significant crossroads. It has emerged among the world's foremost countries in several fields — including the economy, defence, space, renewable energy, technology, entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem. At the same time, its civilizational and cultural influence is reaching the world through Yoga, Indian Knowledge Systems and ancient wisdom such as the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.

However, not everyone will welcome India's rise. As the country grows stronger, it must remain resilient against forces that seek to create division and instability. The decades ahead will be crucial for India.

At such a moment, India can draw inspiration from its own intellectual and spiritual heritage. Among the many individuals who sought to awaken India during the difficult years of colonial rule, Swami Vivekananda stands apart. In a remarkably short life, he sought to instil confidence, courage and self-belief among Indians — speaking of strength, fearlessness, character, education, selfless service and the awakening of the masses.

"His message was not merely spiritual; it was closely connected with the regeneration of Indian society and the building of a confident nation."

The year 2027 marks 125 years since Swami Vivekananda's Mahasamadhi (Punyatithi). It offers an opportunity not merely to remember Swamiji, but to revisit his ideas and share them with a new generation.

The Initiative

Two Pillars of VIVEKANANDA 125

Campus 50

Connecting Swami Vivekananda with Young India

Engaging with 50 educational institutions — creating opportunities for students to encounter Swami Vivekananda through lectures, interactive discussions, reading, digital engagement and practical activities.

Questions the initiative will explore:
  • What was the real Swami Vivekananda beyond quotations and popular imagery?
  • What can his ideas of courage, strength and character offer young India today?
  • How can young people discover their own strengths, interests and purpose?
  • What is the difference between an influencer and a leader?
  • What does "Know Thyself" mean in an age of constant comparison and distraction?
  • How can education become a means of developing character and capability?
  • What does nation-building mean for today's youth?
  • How can technology and modern opportunities be used with greater purpose?

Community 75

Understanding India Beyond the Campus

Extending the initiative to 75 villages and communities — going to the community, listening, understanding, documenting and building meaningful connections with rural India.

"New India, arise! Let her arise from the peasant's cottage… from the factory, from the marts and markets… from the hills and mountains."
— Swami Vivekananda
Village Youth Chaupal will explore:
  • What are the goals and aspirations of village youth?
  • What opportunities do they see in their community?
  • What challenges do they face?
  • What would they like to improve in their village?

A young person should not encounter Vivekananda merely as a historical personality or through a few motivational quotations. The effort is to engage with the deeper questions he raised about self-discovery, character, strength, service, society and nation-building.

"I do not see into the future; nor do I care to see. But one vision I see dear as life before me: that the ancient Mother has awakened once more, sitting on Her throne rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Proclaim Her to all the world with the voice of peace and benediction."
